CHEMISTRY OF COLLOIDAL SILVER

Allan Sutton's original colloidal silver is formed through the electrolysis of 99.99% fine silver in deionised, reverse osmosis filtrated "pure" living spring water. An ion is formed when an atom surrenders one or more electrons. The ion remains in solution searching for some substance with which to bond that can supply the lost electron (s). “Pure” or de-ionized water has negligible impurities, thus supplying no such substance with which the silver ions may bond. Many everyday substances are produced from colloids among these are rubber, liquid soap and plastics. Colloids play an important part in the digestion and excretion of substances in the body.

The body’s tissues are composed of billions of living cells. The minerals and metals in the foods we ingest provide the very life force of these cells. Silver is converted in to particles so minute that they can be utilised by living cells. Doctor Robert O. Becker, MD, who is considered by many to be at the forefront of Colloidal Silver research had this to say “What we have actually done was rediscover the fact that silver killed bacteria, which has been known for centuries. When antibiotics were discovered, clinical uses for silver as an antibiotic were discarded.”

Manufacture of Colloidal Silver

The purest method of manufacturing colloidal silver is the electrolysis process. This is where silver electrodes are immersed in distilled or de-ionised water and a current is passed between the electrodes through this medium.

In today’s world there is no such thing as ‘pure’ water because of pollution and contaminants, so manufacturers use distilled or reverse osmosis treated water instead of our tap water which has so many chemicals added to it. ‘Pure’ water is an insulator and restricts heavily any flow of current, making the electrolysis process painstakingly slow. As more silver ions enter the solution, so the conductivity increases. Many backyard Colloidal Silver manufacturers add salts to improve the conductivity to speed up the process. However the silver ions may bond with the dissolved salts forming potentially toxic compounds. It is also a common occurrence for some operators to add tea, food colouring or other substances to achieve a ‘golden’ colour. If Colloidal Silver is made with a minute particle size, then it should be colourless.

Colloidal Silver should be stored away from light and any magnetic fields, such as computers or microwaves as they can cause the silver to ‘drop out’ of suspension, rendering the product useless. In the last twenty years, hand held, personal generators which are plugged into the mains supply have been marketed to the general public, as a cheap method of obtaining colloidal silver. Because strict laboratory conditions are not maintained in the house hold, the resultant “Colloidal Silver” may actually contain negligible amounts of silver. This would result in the unsuspecting person having the equivalent of plain water or much worse a solution of potentially toxic salts or nitrates! It is best to purchase Colloidal Silver from qualified manufacturers who produce Colloidal Silver under strict laboratory conditions. That way, you can be assured that no contaminants have entered the solution.

Research into Colloidal Silver

Numerous studies have been conducted by professionals into the benefits of colloidal silver. Among these was Dr. Harry Margraf  who, with  Dr. Carl Moyer, Chairman of Washington University’s Department of Surgery,  worked on a project to develop better treatments for burns victims. 22 antiseptic compounds were trialed and rejected. The problem was that infections in burns often failed to respond to antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa in particular is highly infectious to burns and fails to respond to all common antiseptics.  These references pertained to it being a catalyst which disables the enzymes on which anaerobic microorganisms depend. It also showed that bacteria had never developed immunity to silver.

Dr.Margraf trialed silver nitrates, the same substance which was used to wash baby’s eyes at birth, to kill bacteria but this proved to be unsuccessful as it disturbed the balance of body salts and used in large amounts was painful and corrosive.

Using colloidal silver as a base, he developed a salve called silver sulfadiazine, which is now routinely used for severe burns victims, reducing the scarring and causing a heavy reduction in the amount of deaths attributed to extensive severe burns cases.

Because most dressings need to be changed every 12-14 hours, causing severe discomfort to a burns patient, but doctors can now dress burns with a bandage which has silver included in the dressing. The bandage only needs to be changed every 24 hours thus reducing the patients discomfort by half! This method is used in thousands of hospitals around the world!

Dr. Robert O. Becker has done extensive research in to the effectiveness of colloidal silver.

Dr. Becker states in his book, The Body Electric, “Silver deficiency is responsible for the improper functioning of the immune system”.

Researchers say there are only 8 pathogens which are silver resistant. Among these are Citrobacter Freundii and Vegetative B. Cereus Spores.
